The story of Wolf Warrior 2: Special forces in African war zone has created a mighty wave of patriotic ardor with its breath-taking actions, soldiers and western villains.
A flag-waving Chinese action movie – Wolf Warrior 2 -vividly described the country’s soldiers aiding war-devastated Africans from western bad guys has officially become China’s all-time top box-office smash hit, bringing a summer of patriotic cinematic fare.
The insanely famous Wolf Warriors 2 boasts the threatening catchword “whoever offends China will be hunted down no matter how far away they are”, and millions of Chinese cinema lovers have lapped it up since the film’s release less than two months ago.
Wolf Warrior 2 movie has topped more than 3.4bn yuan (£383m) since releasing on 27 July, reported by unofficial China box office trackers Maoyan and other industry tallies.
The movie tells the tale of a former operative with Chinese special elite forces and his excursion into an unknown African war zone to rescue compatriots and oppressed local bystanders from rebels and war-mongering western mercenaries.
The privately funded film, which lasts just over two hours, is creating a huge wave of patriotic ardor drummed up by the ruling Communist party. It also arrives shortly following China opened a naval base in Djibouti, a bold step in the nation’s expanding military presence overseas.
Not all patriotic Chinese movies this season have celebrated such deliriously reviews. The Founding of an Army, which writes down the origins of the People’s Liberation Army, has well-known actors but has been undervalued by critics, audiences and even the families of a large number of Chinese revolutionary heroes.
Wolf Warrior 2 is directed by Wu Jing, a martial arts expert who also participates in the film as the lead role of Leng Feng. It is fully packed with stunning special effects and explosions and its ending sets the stage for a promising third installment. The first movie had achieved nothing near the triumphant success of its sequel.
State media has jumped on the bandwagon, with the Global Times – which at times takes a strongly expressed nationalist tone – referring the movie as “a true phenomenon”.
Many Chinese audiences claim Wolf Warrior 2 success is due not only to its distinctive message about China’s rising military might but also largely to its high quality action scenes, intense, breath-taking stunts and acting.
