Nobody ever expected the seventh Child’s Play movie to be this amazing, but Cult of Chucky full movie delivers a full-size dose of strange scares.
Is there any horror series that has had a better sequels than Child’s Play? The first installment was a true slasher innovator with tons of quirk to go along with its creep. But it came along quite late in the game so Cult of Chucky full movie free was always doomed to stand behind the shadow of bigger (and taller) horror epics like Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. It spawned two instant sequels, but similar to his masked or burned compatriots, it was diminishing returns quite early on.
But then came along 1998’s Bride of Chucky, an odd almost send-up which featured Jennifer Tilly as Tiffany, Chucky’s soulmate/fellow killer doll. The only thing weirder than sole evil doll is two evil dolls. And the only thing more strange than two demonic dolls is their offspring, who we encountered in 2004’s Seed of Chucky, a relatively schlocky 90 minutes that was so self-aware it not only cast Jennifer Tilly as herself but brought in John Waters for a brief cameo, just in case you had any doubt about where a film that had a woman getting artificially impregnated by a turkey baster filled with doll jizz’s loyalties lay. Seed of Chucky was series creator Don Mancini’s debut in directing his doll pal, and he came back for 2013’s Curse of Chucky, which brought things back down to earth (not literally, of course), for a more straight up horror approach that felt more in sync with the first entry.
All of this definitely brings us to Cult of Chucky full movie 2017, which finds Mancini back in the director’s sear. While the slasher series model nowadays appears to be either “go back to basics” or “ignore the bad sequels and pretend this is the second installment in the series” Cult of Chucky, in genuine Child’s Playfashion, is a gloriously strange and appropriately vulgar “fuck you” to that sort of logic.
Sure it has Fiona Dourif’s Nica Pierce from Curse of Chucky movie free, and Alex Vincent as first Chucky victim/hero Andy Barclay for another stab at the series, but it’s not to sorry for its history, or even to particularly take pleasure in it. No, Cult of Chucky full movie free online is full steam ahead into a different world of odd, burying the shock n’ schlock of Bride and Seed for a nearly Kubrickian sense of sterility amidst its continuous stabs at psychological horror.
Set in the same mental institution that you’ll probably find yourself confined to if you think about the franchise’s logic too hard, Cult of Chucky covers Nica Pierce’s story from Curse of Chucky, introduces a plenty of fellow inmates who have a hard enough time without a devil talking doll running around, throws in a skeevy doctor with a talent for hypnosis, and brings in various Chucky dolls just to extend to the fullest the hallucinatory effect. Chucky himself appears even more aware of the weirdness of the proceedings than before, but the effect isn’t one of self-mock (which both Bride and Seed flirted with), instead managing to elevate the weirdness and threat even further. I’d rather not dive further into the plot, because the more unaware you dive into this, the more fun you’ll experience.
Chucky (well, Chuckys this time around) has been getting progressively more expressive without ever losing sight of the fact that this is a character made all the more menacing by his limitations. So, more expressive is good, while more agile/mobile would be bad. That humungous head and those brightly colorful overalls stand out neatly against the stark, clear, whiteness of the hospital (and the snow covered exteriors), which also serve to signify the impact of the expected number of decapitations and skull crushings. While Cult of Chucky full movie has moments that are both extremely real and terrifying, it still has time to nod to at least a couple of the more out there details of Child’s Play continuity, lest you worry that the series is ashamed of its history.
Cult of Chucky full movie free only lets down when you stop to reflect on how thin the actual plot is, then again, you’re reading this review and you’ve perhaps watched at least three other Child’s Play entries that are far worse. I never would have taken the bet that the seventh film in the franchise would be one of its best, but here we are. With a 91-minute runtime, pound for pound and kill for kill, Chucky is finally stabbing well above his weight class. All these years later, Chucky may just prove to be more durable, creative, and fun than the big guys who kept him down.
